The talented group of wide receivers on the Mississippi roster in the 2010 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic should provide a tough test for the secondary from Alabama. Rivals.com's Chris Nee breaks down the matchup.
The players:
Mississippi wide receivers: Nickalos Brassell (South Panola), Tobias Singleton (Madison Central), Josh Pinkston (Forest), Devin Fosselman (Wilkinson County) and Joseph Morrow (Ocean Springs)
Alabama defensive backs: Eric Dixon (Vigor), Erique Florence (Valley), Jacquese Kirk (Walker), Jonathan Rose (Leeds), Anthony Swain (Gadsden City) and E.J. May (McGill Toolen)
The breakdown:
The Mississippi wideouts are likely the strongest part of the Magnolia State squad. They are led by two Rivals250 prospects in Brassell and Singleton. Brassell, a Mississippi State commitment, could end up playing a variety of positions due to his great athleticism and versatility. He could end up at quarterback or as a running back, used specifically in wildcat-like formations. Singleton is a tall target with good speed who is just an all-around solid athlete. He will be a major target for the Mississippi offense.
The other three wide receivers for the Mississippi squad are not chopped liver. Morrow and Fosselman are both Mississippi State commitments. Morrow is a tall, outside target at 6 feet 5, while Fosselman is more of an inside wide receiver at 5-10, who will likely contribute in the slot. Pinkston is an uncommitted prospect who checks in at 6-2, 190 pounds. If the Mississippi offense is able to find some continuity between their quarterbacks and wide receivers, they can pose a serious threat with the talent they have at the skills positions on the outside.
The Alabama secondary consists of two Auburn commitments (Rose & Swain), a Louisville commitment (Kirk), a Kentucky commitment (Dixon), a prospect leaning to Kentucky (May), and another one that remains open at this time but many expect to remain in-state (Florence). Not a bad collection of talent.
The safety spots will likely be handled by Florence and Swain, who both possess great size and versatility. Florence is a quick, long defensive back who isn't afraid to hit somebody. He probably handles free safety. Swain, who is built a lot like a linebacker, will likely be handling the strong safety spot. Rose is a big cornerback who has great ball skills. May and Kirk will provide solid depth across the board.
