Notes: Full name is Sandon Mark (last name is pronounced "HERZ-lick"). Linebacker-fullback who also played lacrosse as a Pennsylvania prep. As a true freshman in 2006, played in 12 games (made two starts at middle linebacker in place of the injured Jo-Lonn Dunbar) and recorded 42 tackles, five for loss and one sack with two pass breakups, one interception and a forced fumble. Started all 14 games at weak-side 'backer in '07, totaling 97-12-1½ with four pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Was named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in '08 - moved to the strong side and paced the defense by registering 110-13-3 with eight pass breakups, six interceptions (two TDs) and two forced fumbles in 14 starts. Missed the '09 season while battling Ewing's Sarcoma, a form of cancer typically found in bone or soft tissue. Had a rod inserted in his left leg for stabilization and underwent radiation and chemotherapy. Returned to participate in non-contact drills during '10 spring practice, but suffered a stress fracture in his right foot during preseason camp. Started all 13 games in '10 at "Sam" linebacker, managing 65-3½-0 with four pass breakups, four interceptions and two forced fumbles. Broke his left hand in practice before the North Carolina State game and bruised his sternum against Florida State.
Positives: Outstanding body length. Has big hands. Good instincts. Outstanding zone awareness - drops at depth, reacts to throws and has hands to snare interceptions. Striking tackler. Intense competitor - motor always runs. Bench-pressed 225 pounds 29 times at the Combine. Smart, resilient and hardworking - overcame great adversity to get back on the field and is very committed to the game.
Negatives: Has a rod in his leg remaining from surgery to remove a tumor. Speed and burst was sapped upon return from cancer. Shows rigidity in his movement. Struggles to sink his hips and break down in space or change direction easily. Long-term durability could be an issue.
Summary: Medical evaluations will knock him off many draft boards and could even leave him undrafted. The team that takes a chance could land a Mike Vrabel-type 3-4 outside 'backer capable of rushing the passer and instinctively playing the pass.

NFL projection: Late draftable pick.
