The good: Smith is a smallish cornerback who weighed in at the NFL Combine at 174 pounds and just over 5 feet 10. He plays much bigger than his size in coverage. His speed is average, but he makes up for it with excellent recognition skills and fine foot quickness. He has good hand usage and is able to read and react quickly to the route and read the QB's eyes. He can press and redirect receivers at the line, though he lacks the power to control them over the first few strides but he stay with them nicely with his quick footwork and fast reactions. The bad: Smith's biggest problem is his size. Aside from that, he has a low backpedal, but he shows good ability in his transition with the ability to plant and drive on the ball. He is quick to support the run but is only a drag-down tackler with marginal ability in run support. Outlook: Smith could do a good job in defenses that use a predominant Cover-2 scheme. He shows the burst of speed to get to the ball and make the play. He is a corner with the talent to be a nice surprise. He is a probable late-round pick or free agent signee with the tools to help as a nickel corner and possibly develop further. He carries a makes-it grade.
